Notes for Col. Brinton Paine
Fought in Washington's Army in the American Revolution with his six brothers. He was held prisoner aboard a British ship "The Old Sugar House" near what is now Brooklyn Navy Yard. He was released in a prisoner exchange, due largely to his good friend George Clinton who was Governor of New York. Brinton's letters to Gov. Clinton are preserved in Albany. After the War, he served on the New York Legislature. He moved to Dutchess County, New York in about 1777. In 1790, he removed to Newton and bought a huge tract of land on which the city of Elmira now stands. There he maintained a small Tavern on Newtown Creek. Refer to accounts of his service. Newtown, NY, where he died, was later named "Elmira" after his granddaughter, daughter of Polly (Paine) and Nathan Teall.12
